Rise from the dead my Acer Aspire One!!!

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 | General

Tried to start my Acer Aspire One (AOA110) today… The screen would remain black although the power led was on…Tried removing the battery, stopping and starting the netbook multiple times…nothing..it was dead as real estate investor in the US in 2008.

Because I really needed to start the damn thing I googled to see what other brothers in sufferance existed. It seems what my little gadget had was more common than your average flue … the solution BIOS recovery… Didn’t sound ok because I hadn’t performed a BIOS update with a black screen before…

Acer had implemented a BIOS upgrade procedure without an operating system. What I had to do was

1. Download the latest BIOS for my device from http://gd.panam.acer.com/home/

2. Get a USB memory stick, format it to FAT

3. Unzip the BIOS downloaded and copied from DOS_FLASH directory on to the USB stick FLASHIT.EXE file and the *.fd file (in my case 3310.fd). The *.fd file must be renamed to ZG5IA32.FD.

4. Make sure your laptop is off and it has both battery and power cable plugged in.

5. Hold FN+ESC keys pressed and keep them pressed - press the power button to start the laptop.

6. Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds - you will see the power button. Press the power button once. The Acer will now initiate the BIOS flash, do not interrupt it under any circumstances!!!

7.After some time the power button will stop blinking and in 10 seconds or so netbook will reboot.
